Pet Blood Bank UK

Pet Blood Barnk UK

What would you do if your dog needed a blood transfusion?

Pet Blood Bank UK (PBBuk) is a not for profit charity which provides a national canine blood bank. PBBuk is the first service of its kind to collect, process, store and supply pet blood products.

For critically ill dogs, blood transfusions can mean the difference between life or death. Until 2005, if a dog needed a blood transfusion, a vet would normally either bleed his own dog or would call upon a donor from a list of volunteer donors. When legislation changed that year, making it possible for vets to store blood products Vets Now, the Out Of Hours emergency vets launched Pet Blood Bank UK, the UK’s first canine blood donation charity.

Similar to the National Blood Service, PBBuk holds blood collection sessions across the UK and owners will register their dog as a donor and bring their dog along to a session near them to donate. After the blood is collected it is then taken to the Pet Blood Bank laboratory in Loughborough where it is spun down into plasma and red blood cells and then supplied to veterinary clinics nationwide, helping to save the lives of thousands of dogs each year; dogs like Lester, a three month old Lurcher puppy who was badly injured in a road traffic accident.

Lester was taken to his local Vets Now emergency clinic in deep shock, suffering from such severe internal bruising that he needed an instant transfusion to save his life. He recovered amazingly quickly from his ordeal, but had there not been a supply of negative blood available at the time of his accident, it is very possible that Lester would have died that day.
